Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays and official vacation as well. It consists of a period of celebrations of 15 days, starting on New Year's Day, celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, unless there is an intercalary eleventh or twelfth month in the lead-up to the New Year—in such a case, the New Year falls on the day of the third new moon after the solstice.
The Chinese New Year period terminates with the Lantern Festival, the fifteenth day of the month, which is the last day of the festival. Knowing its celebration and holiday schedules will let you well prepared some events when staying in China.
Chinese people believe that Nian ("Nyehn") was a reptilian predator that could infiltrate houses silently like the infamous man-eating leopards of India. China's passenger traffic is expected to reach 2.5 billion this year during the Chinese Lunar New Year time, an increase of 7.7 percent from the previous year, an official from the National Development and Reform Commission said. China's economic planning agency has formally approved a plan to build a Disney theme park in Shanghai, giving the city a new showcase following next year's World Expo.The National Development and Reform Commission said in a notice Tuesday that the long-awaited park would be built, as expected, in Shanghai's eastern Pudong district.
Kunqu, also known as Kunju, Kun opera or Kunqu Opera, is one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera. It evolved from the Kunshan melody, and dominated Chinese theatre from the 16th to the 18th centuries.The opera' name suggests that it originates in Kunshan of Jiangsu Province. Originally called "Kunshan Accent" or abbreviated as "Kun Accent", it has also been called "Kunqu Opera" since the Qing Dynasty.
